Studio vs. In-Home Newborn Photography: Which Is Right for Your Family?

One of the first decisions you'll make when planning newborn photographs is where you'd like your session to take place.

For families in Rockford, Grand Rapids, and throughout West Michigan, I offer both studio and in-home newborn photography.

Neither experience needs to look or feel exactly the same.

Your choice really comes down to what you want your photographs to remember about this season of your life.

Do you envision simple, timeless portraits of your baby?

Or do you want to remember the nursery, the morning light coming through your windows, the way you held your baby in the living room, and what those first days at home actually felt like?

Here's a look at both.

Studio Newborn Photography

A studio session gives you a beautiful, simple environment where the focus can stay completely on your baby and your family.

My Rockford-area studio is intentionally designed with a calm, comfortable experience in mind.

I use minimal props, soft fabrics, beautiful textures, and simple styling so your baby remains the focus.

The result is timeless newborn imagery without a lot of visual distractions.

A studio session may be right for you if you want:

Simple, timeless newborn portraits

A variety of beautiful baby-focused images

A controlled, comfortable environment

Clean backgrounds and soft textures

Family and sibling portraits

A classic newborn photography experience

And you don't need to worry about bringing your entire house to the studio.

I've stocked the studio with many of the essentials families may need during their session, so you can keep your diaper bag simple.

In-Home Newborn Photography

An in-home session is a completely different kind of experience.

Instead of creating the setting in a studio, we photograph your family in the place where you're beginning this new chapter together.

Your nursery becomes part of the story.

Your couch becomes part of the story.

The little corners of your home where you'll spend countless hours feeding, rocking, and getting to know your baby become part of the story, too.

My in-home newborn sessions are more documentary-focused, capturing your family naturally in your own space.

We'll photograph the details that make this season yours—the nursery, tiny fingers and toes, feedings, snuggles, sibling interactions, and those ordinary moments that you may not realize you'll miss someday.

An in-home session may be right for you if you want:

Documentary-style newborn photography

Natural family interactions

Photographs in your baby's nursery

The story of your family at home

A relaxed, familiar environment

Less emphasis on traditional posing

And no, your house does not need to be perfectly clean or perfectly styled.

We're not photographing your entire house.

We'll find the spaces with the best light and work within what you already have.

What If You Want Both?

You don't necessarily have to choose.

For families who love the timeless look of studio newborn photography but also want photographs that tell the story of their life at home, I offer the option to bring a studio-style setup into your home.

This gives you the best of both worlds.

We can create beautiful, simple newborn portraits while also documenting your family naturally in the spaces where your baby's first days are unfolding.

It's a wonderful option if you love both styles and don't want to choose between them.

Studio or In-Home: Which Tells Your Story?

Think about what you want to remember when you look at these photographs years from now.

Maybe it's your baby's tiny features.

Maybe it's the way your older child looked at their new sibling.

Maybe it's the nursery you spent months preparing.

Maybe it's the feeling of all of you piled together on the couch during those first sleepy days at home.

There isn't one right answer.

Your photographs should reflect what matters to you.

A Newborn Session Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

Whichever experience you choose, my approach remains the same: baby leads the way.

We don't rush your baby through the session to fit a timeline.

We make time for feeding, changing, soothing, and snuggling.

We don't force poses.

And we don't expect you to have everything figured out.

Whether we're in the studio or your home, my goal is to create photographs that feel beautiful while still feeling like you.

If you're planning newborn photos in Rockford, Grand Rapids, or somewhere in West Michigan, I'd love to help you decide which experience feels right for your family.
