When Should You Book Newborn Photos?
When should we book newborn photos?
If you're expecting a baby, you've probably started thinking about all the things you need to plan before their arrival. Your nursery, your hospital bag, tiny clothes, pediatrician appointments—and somewhere on that list, you may be wondering:
When should we book newborn photos?
As a Rockford, Michigan newborn photographer, I recommend reaching out during your second trimester. This gives us plenty of time to plan your session without adding another last-minute decision to your already very full plate.
And don't worry—we don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive yet.
Why Book Newborn Photos During Pregnancy?
Your due date is really just an educated guess. Babies have their own plans, which is why I don't schedule your newborn session based solely on your estimated due date.
Instead, we'll reserve your session while you're pregnant and then finalize the exact date once your baby arrives.
Booking ahead also means you can take this off your list before the beautiful chaos of bringing a new baby home begins.
Once baby is here, you can focus on getting to know your little one, recovering, resting, and soaking up those first days together.
I'll take care of the photography details.
When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?
For studio newborn portraits, many photographers recommend photographing babies within the first two weeks after birth.
During this stage, babies are often sleepy and naturally curl into those sweet newborn positions.
But I don't believe your baby has to fit into a specific timeline for your photographs to be meaningful.
My approach is baby-led newborn photography, which means we follow your baby's cues rather than forcing them into a particular pose or rushing through the session to get a certain image.
That means we can create beautiful photographs whether your baby is a sleepy little newborn or a more alert, curious four-week-old.
What If My Baby Comes Early or Late?
The truth is we won't know when baby will get here till they do! When booking we use your due date as an anchor and I reserve time in my calendar surrounding that date. I limit the number of newborn sessions per month to ensure your baby can be photographed in within 2-4 weeks after birth.
Once your baby arrives, simply let me know and we will select your session date and time.
We'll look at your baby's age, your recovery, and your family's schedule and find a date that works.
If your baby arrives earlier than expected, we'll adjust.
If your baby decides to stay cozy a little longer, we'll adjust.
There is no need to stress about getting the "perfect" newborn day.
What If We're Already Past the Newborn Stage?
You haven't missed your chance.
While the first couple of weeks can be ideal for sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits, there is no expiration date on photographing your baby.
A slightly older newborn may be more awake and expressive. We can photograph those wide-open eyes, tiny stretches, emerging personality, and all of the things that make this particular stage yours.
Lifestyle and baby-led sessions can be especially beautiful beyond the traditional newborn window.
Your baby doesn't need to be a certain age to deserve to be photographed.
When Should You Reach Out?
If you're currently pregnant and know you'd like newborn photographs, now is a great time to get on the calendar.
I serve families throughout Rockford, Grand Rapids, and West Michigan with both studio and in-home newborn photography.
Whether you're envisioning simple, timeless studio portraits or a more documentary experience in your own home, we'll create a session around your family and your baby.
And when the big day finally comes, you won't have to worry about making everything perfect.
Baby arrives. You let me know. We take it from there.
